Newsletter #4 - Soft Like Snow

Meditation gurus often compare the wandering monkey mind to particles in a shaken paperweight. The glitter that swirls inside the glass is like our sometimes racing and uneasy thoughts. It can feel like there’s a storm whirling in all directions in our heads. This is where meditation, breath, and focus come in. Then, like the glitter once the paperweight has been set down to rest, thoughts settle, and the mind becomes clear.

Last week in class, we befriended our thoughts. We acknowledged them as what they are—just thoughts.  We didn’t discriminate between good or bad—all thoughts had the same weight and the same beauty.

Here’s what we imagined…

Your head is like the top of a giant snow globe. It’s very dark and in the blackness you can see white letters, which begin to form words. These are thoughts, long and short and they are swirling around, like gentle snowflakes in the sky. As you breathe out, the particles move down to your chest. On the next exhale, the snow moves down your belly and on the next exhale, to your pelvis.

Another image was that you are on your mat, and your thoughts swirl around you like light pieces of  snow. First, the snow spins around your head and then it drops a little lower and twists around your shoulders then to you torso, your knees and eventually it moves all the way down to the ground. Once settled, it forms a sparkly white blanket, like snow on a peaceful morning. When you are ready, you can decide how you will move off the mat and what kind of imprint you will make.

Enjoy the upcoming storms.
Stay Soft

Centering by Danna Faulds
Here. Right here, right now, bring your mind to this place and time. Invite it, even if it resists, to sit and witness what it is to be alive. Let there be no ulterior motive in this moment but to be.
Rest on the waves of breath and choose to experience all
